Savings Plan

The savings plan calculator helps you calculate what your savings goal should be.

Example, How long will $1,000,000 last assuming you make $5,000 monthly withdrawals and earn a 2.5% interest rate?. Enter "1,000,000.00" (do not type the "$" sign or the commas) for the "Starting Amount". For the "Annual Interest Rate" enter "2.5%". Since we are going to solve for the "Number of Periods", enter "0". And for the "Periodic Withdrawal" enter "5,000". Make sure "Withdrawal Frequency" and "Compounding Freqency" are set to "Monthly".

Click "Calc" and the result should be "258" periods or 21.5 years (285 months / 12 months per year).

You can solve for "Annual Interest Rate" or "Periodic Withdrawal Amount" in a similar way. Just enter "0.0" for the unknown value.

If you need to calculate what your goal amount should be (i.e. the "Starting Amount") use the PV of an Annuity Calculator .

What is a Savings Plan Calculator?

A savings plan calculator helps you establish your savings goal. Start with the goal amount that you have in mind (the "Starting Amount", also known as "present value" or "PV") and calculate how long the amount will last if you make withdrawals of "X" amount. Or you can set the number of perods that you want the starting amount to last and calculate how much you can withdrawal.

Click on "Help" for an example.

If you want to calculate the "Starting Amount" use the Present Value of an Annuity Calculator". (Be sure to set the "Cash Flow Timing" to "Start of Period".) The calculated "Present Value" will be your "Starting Amount" for this calculator and then you can use it as your "Goal Amount" in our Savings Calculator.
